As much as the artist within loves to play, sometimes we all need a little help to get us started, to keep going or to finish our creative projects. These are some of my favorite methods to find success with my creative project:

  1. Set a goal. If you don’t know where you’re going, how will you know when you’ve arrived?
  2. Drum up some affirmations to go with that goal. Say the affirmations 3 times to yourself in the mirror twice a day. You can even add ones that have nothing to do with the project. No one said there was a limit to it.
  3. Understand the time of day the works for you. If morning is your best time, set the alarm clock just a tad bit earlier. If late evening is better, set aside an hour or two just for that very activity
  4. Find a ritual that starts it off for you. I tend to light some incense and put on a particular type of music to get myself in that mode.
  5. Keep an ideas book or a favorites list to peruse when stumped or in need of a kick start.
  6. Drop the (insert implement here) and back away from the project. Take a break. Stop trying so hard.
  7. Alternately - Just do it! – slap some paint on a canvas, put some words on a page (even if it’s about how you can’t think of anything to write)
  8. Find old projects and start reworking them.
  9. Get out in nature - the forest/park/beach – green is good for the soul.
  10. Move! Dance in the living room, go for a run, take a quick stroll to the grocery store. Do anything that gets the blood flowing and sending that much needed oxygen to the brain.
