Spiritual Healing of the Store-bought Variety

I used to love going into those new age stores that have frequented the streets since the ‘60’s. You know the ones: musical chimes softly playing in the background, the scent of incense wafting through the air, and books splayed out in a dizzying array of color and claims.
I thought that these places were quite magical and that just by my merely being present in the store, I’d be part of that magic. I genuinely thought if I bought a crystal, or a ring or any other type of trinket, I would be taking that fairy dust home with me to rub off on my life.
At one point, I was assisting a store owner of a new age store with her marketing plan and came across, horror of all horrors, a catalog. I could not believe my eyes. These beloved trinkets were mass produced! I guess I thought some crones sat around in their covens whipping up these new age delicacies up by incantation. Wrong-o! I was heartbroken that there was nothing more special about them than any other product retailed around the globe.
And then I realized it had nothing to do with fairy tales. It more has to do with what I felt was missing in my life and what I needed to do to heal it. Being a child in an era of instant gratification and “bigger, better, faster,” I didn’t have a lot of acceptance in my life nor did I understand the concept of creating my own reality. I realized that the magic lies within. It’s a matter of recognizing, accepting and running with that power.
These new age trinkets today lie gently on my shelves collecting dust and reminding me of my new found abilities to rely on my own charms.

Yes, but at least you DID REALIZE sooner rather than later that they are but mere trinkets, and that the strength you need to be an overcomer in life is within your very self! That’s a pretty special thing, I think!
